Small businesses are an important part of our economy and culture, and it’s so great to see the revived desire to support the “little guys.” As National Small Business Week comes to a close, we’d like to highlight a few small businesses that we patronize, both personally and professionally. We hope you’ll pay them a visit!
FOOD!
Huckleberry, in Santa Monica, is our go-to place for a great meal on our day off. We often eat way too much, because it’s difficult to choose between their amazing sandwiches and delicious selection of homemade pastries. So, we usually get a few of each.
The Oaks Gourmet is a feast for the senses. Whether we’re picking up supplies for the perfect picnic, makings for a wine & cheese night, or a great housewarming gift, The Oaks is where we head. It’s a beautifully curated neighborhood market that has a little of everything. They also have a bakery area that offers up a variety of hot and cold prepared foods that are DELICIOUS.
Since its opening almost 3 years ago, Rascal has been our local watering hole. It is a great place to spend an evening, be it on a date or hanging with friends. Owned by Sandy and Rebecca and staffed by the friendliest of faces, Rascal is our “Cheers.” They serve up delicious American fare and Happy Hour lasts all night on Mondays.
PETS!
Hound Dog and Cat is a family-owned Pet supply store located at Pico and Hauser in a beautifully revamped space. Karena is super nice and helpful with any pet related question. Plus, on Fridays from 5p-7p they have Yappy Hour, where they serve beer and wine and let dogs run around the store. Fun for the whole family!
Michelle, the owner of The Dog House, has been taking care of LA’s dogs for years at her place on 3rd and Hauser. Whenever we drop off our Aussie, Ollie, he excitedly barks up a storm, riling up the rest of the canine crew. And, he always comes home happy and tired.
PAPER!
LA Press Printing has been around for over 25 years, and we use them for almost all of Milk Jar’s printing needs. They are nice, helpful, and best of all, they work fast and the quality is top notch!
Little Trees Studio is our favorite local letterpress studio. The company is owned and operated by the very talented Teresa, who is also the in-house graphic designer. We hired her to design and press our gift card holders, and we couldn’t love them more. Check out her Etsy site!
Ink Meets Paper is a husband & wife design/letterpress team, based in Charleston, SC. Each of their cards has a story behind it, which they capture in a little video. Courtney may have spent an hour or so watching them all… We love their motto: “Text Less, Write More,” and we carry a variety of their cards at Milk Jar Cookies so we can do just that. To get your hands on their wares, visit their Etsy shop!
TOYS!
In the days of digital everything, it is so refreshing and fun to have a good old fashioned toy store just a couple blocks away. Owned and operated by Christine Johnson, this toy store is stocked floor to ceiling with quality toys for kids of all ages. It is our first stop when in need of a birthday present or new board game for the house.
