Now that 5466 Wilshire was a blank shell, it was time to start the fun stuff! Throughout the month of demolition, we had also been working with the architects and contractor, figuring out the placement of each piece of equipment, countertop heights and lengths, etc., down to the 1/32 of an inch. And, though they would continue to change over the next 2 months, we had a solid set of plans with which to begin.
Construction started on February 9, 2013, and by the end of day 1, we could already see it coming to life
All of the workers put in so many hours and worked very hard for us. Every morning, we would arrive, hear the plan for the day, and when we would come back that evening, it was amazing to see what they had accomplished. Adam was so great about taking pictures, and I'm thankful he thought to do so! I just wish he was in more of them. Perhaps he needs a lesson in selfies?
Henry, our awesome foreman, ingeniously set up his office using a ceiling tile and sink.
While the workers were busy inside, Adam hung our "coming soon" banner. That was an exciting day!
One of the days it really began to feel real, for me, was when the structure for the counters went in. I could suddenly envision myself standing in that corner, making dough. Can you tell I was kinda happy?
One of the hardest decisions we had to make was the paint colors. We must have driven to every paint shop and hardware store in town 10 times and gotten at least 50 samples to test before we finally made up our minds. Maybe the sunshine yellow on the existing wall was making it harder to envision the final outcome...
Some of our amazing friends joined us for a painting party on Saturday afternoon.
Day by day, the place was transforming into our vision, and it was awesome. Before we knew it, the ceiling and floor were in, wallpaper was up, lights were hung, and the walls were painted. It was almost time to load in the equipment and add the details and finishing touches that we'd been working on in the meantime. Here's a sneak peek of that post, coming next week!
