Since this is the first episode of the Cookie History series, I thought we should take it back to the very beginning with the origins of the cookie itself.
The first cookies are thought to date back as early as the 7th Century A.D. in present-day Iran. That’s around the time that sugar became a common baking ingredient in the region. So how was the cookie invented? Well, as every good baker knows, you have to make sure your oven is at the right temperature. Back then, bakers would put a small portion of their cake batter in the oven to test the temperature. Eventually, that little dollop of cake batter became the cookie we know and love today. Fun fact: the word cookie actually comes from the Dutch word for “small cake.” Isn’t history delicious?
